Arthritis
Definition:
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the one or more joints that causes swelling, pain, tenderness and joint stiffness.
What is Arthritis?
- A joint is where two or more bones meet, such as in the shoulders, knees, elbows and fingers. Joints hold bones and allow them to move freely within limits.
- Most of the joints are surrounded by capsule. The capsule is filled with synovial fluid that helps to lubricate the joint.
- The ends of the bones within a joint are lined with cartilage. This cartilage allows bones to glide over one another as they move. Cartilage is a firm but flexible connective tissue. It protects the joints by absorbing the pressure and shock when moving and putting stress. A reduction in the normal amount of this cartilage tissue causes arthritis.
- Arthritis can affect any joint but is most common in knees, hands, wrists, feet, ankles, shoulders and lumbar spine. Some joints naturally wear down with age that’s why arthritis is extremely common in people older than 50 years.
Causes:
- Age: Happens naturally as age – a lifetime using joints can eventually wear down cartilage cushioning.
- Previous joint injury: Who has injured the joint more likely to eventually develop arthritis.
- High uric acid: May develop gout.
- Immune System: Immune system can cause rheumatoid arthritis and lupus arthritis when it damages joints by mistake.
- Certain Infections: Bacteria and viruses can cause septic arthritis.
- Family History: Some types of arthritis run in the family.
- Obesity: Might have more chances to have arthritis if you aren’t physically active regularly .
- Sex: Women are more likely to be affected than men.
- Idiopathic: With no cause or trigger Arthritis happens.
